Travelling times:
Because of the difficulties associated with both roads, which are compounded by deer, sheep and cattle, travelling times to and from the various locations on the peninsula are lengthy.
Figures 6 and 7 show typical travelling times from Lochcarron to some of the populated areas on the peninsula and Figure 8 shows the routes which must be travelled.
Figures 9 and 10 show typical travelling times from Torridon to some of the populated areas on the peninsula and Figure 11 shows the routes which must be travelled.
Times in both cases are given for normal and difficult conditions. Difficult conditions are defined as being either during winter or during the tourist season which together account for approximately 80% of the year. All times are based on local knowledge of the road conditions. It is interesting to note that most of these times, which are based on local knowledge, are substantially less than times provided by "AutoRoute" using its default settings, which was apparently used by NHS Highland when compiling their initial time schedules.
