Images of the Bealach na Ba:
The main road access to the populated areas of the peninsula of Applecross is by the notorious Bealach na
Ba, which, at 626 meters (2053 feet), is the highest mountain road in Scotland. It is higher than the Drumochter Pass or
Slochd Summit on the A9, but unlike the A9, is a narrow, exposed, single-track road with passing places. The alternative
route, which prior to 1975 was a footpath, is the North coast road which is also narrow, exposed, single-track with passing
places.
This is the road that GPs would have to travel when visiting patients during out of hours duties under the 'cluster'
system proposed by NHS Highland.
